A pair of Javanese dance masks, c.late 19th/ early 20th century, with custom made stands, these bird form dance masks are decorated with polychrome paint and are traditionally used in a dramatic form of Indonesian dance called a Topeng dance, in which mask wearing, ornately costumed performers interpret traditional narratives concerning fabled Kings, heroes and myth accompanied by gamelan music Provenance: from the private collection of an Australian diplomat, collected throughout Asia in the 1980's and 1990's.
