Description:
Georgian Old Sheffield plate meat cover, with silver insert armorial and tinned underside, 35 cm wide, 21 cm high approx., Old Sheffield plate was invented in the middle of the 18th C when it was discovered that a layer of silver could be fused onto copper producing products that look as if they were made of solid silver. The designs used by Sheffield plate manufacturers were copied from popular styles of silverware and indeed, much Sheffield plate was made by silversmiths. By 1842 Elkington & Co. of Birmingham had perfected the process of silver deposition on a preformed surface, this became known as silver plating or electro plating. The success of Sheffield plate ended soon after this and by the 1860s had almost ceased to be manufactured
