A Yimam hook figure (Yipwon), Amancabi Village, Korewari River Region, Papua New Guinea (mid twentieth century), carved wood, 139 cm high. The Leahy family is an important name in the discovery and exploration of Papua New Guinea. Richard Leahy, son of the noted explorer, Michael James (Mick) Leahy was a pilot in New Guinea for 40 years until a plane crash in 2010 ended his career and he was critically injured. In 1930 Mick Leahy and his brother Danny, along with Mick Dwyer, walked into the highlands ofPapua New Guinea in search of gold. They made contact with unknown tribes and documented and filmed their explorations extensively and were the subject of the 1983 documentary First Contact.
