Description:
A fine Minton & Co. Christopher Dresser exhibition vase, in the Japanese aesthetic style, English circa 1880, 60.5 cm high. Associated with the design reform movement in the second half of the nineteenth century, Christopher Dresser is considered the first industrial designer. A prolific writer, lecturer and designer, he created forms and ornament for a wide range of manufacturers including Mintons with whom he had a long association from the 1860's to the 1880's., Dresser was inspired by botanical forms and the arts of Japan and his comprehensive and landmark publication Japan: Its Architecture, Art and Art Manufactures (1882) helped perpetuate the fashion for japonisme in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The present lot is a fine example of the influence of japonisme in Dresser's designs with the inclusion of the fan and the oriental flowers in the decoration.
