Description:
Superb early Queensland boomerang etched motifs on upper side comprising several irregular and abutting elongated oval shapes formed by some five indentation scores; an area of crosses, double strokes and an individual 'S' shaped motif on the left tip. Unetched on reverse. Deep, dark patina. Provenance: Gifted to the owner's grandfather (Mr Noble Frank Lowndes) circa 1927 by the then General Manager of MLC (Mutual life and Citizens Inc.) at its Martin place, Sydney head office, thence by descent to the present owner. The gifting of the boomerang (said by MLC to be pre-European) was on the occasion of MLC posting Mr. Noble Lowndes to London to scope the opening of its inaugural London office in 1927. The symbolism of the gift was intended by MLC to wish Mr. Lowndes good hunting (for business opportunities) and a safe return (physically and financially): all in a uniquely Australian manner. 72 cm
