Description:
Four exceptional George III mahogany hall chairs, English by Thomas and G Seddon, London, English, circa 1800. Bearing painted crests one stamped TB, 92 cm high, seats 44 cm wide. Provenance: One pair Martyn Cook Antiques, Sydney the other Horners Auctions Norfolk August 2005. The Seddon family ran a large cabinetmaking and upholstery business in London from 1753 until the mid-19th century (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, London, 1996, p.414, fig. 821). A pair of identical chairs with the label of Thomas & George Seddon and bearing their Aldersgate Street address in use between circa 1817& 1840, was sold anonymously, Philips, London, 19th June 1990, Lot 110. A single chair of this model was sold anonymously, Bonhams, 9 April 2002, Lot 103 & a pair was sold anonymously, Drewett Neate, 30 January 2002, Lot 492
