No.XVII - November 1857' cover sheet and the complete 4 page newsletter, printed & published by George Slater, Melbourne; depicts 'An Australian Sunset, from a painting by E. v. Guerard', engraved by F. Grosse. Subjects covered include railways, State Aid to Religion, Public Education, 'The ship 'Commodore Perry' has introduced the small pox.A warrant is out for the ship's surgeon, who has absconded.'; The Victorian Industrial Society announces an Exhibition of Live Stock, Implements, and Produce, to be held at the Junction of the St. Kilda and Gardiner's Creek Roads; the bridge over the Yarra, between Richmond and Prahran, is finished, as far as regards the building itself, and an ugly clumsy affair it is; but it is inaccessible for want of approaches'; regarding gold mining, the News Letter reports 'The new reef at Steiglitz is turning out richer than at first anticipated. Two nuggets of 370 ounces and 71 ounces respectively, have been taken out at Kingover..'; (3 sheets)
