Rare Waterloo Cup three piece silver presentation suite by Henry Steiner, a tapering cylindrical body with inverted leaf capped handle and engraved: 'South Australian Coursing Club/ Waterloo Cup/ Trophy/ Presented By / R. Barr Smith Esq/ Won By/ Mess.Rs Hubble and Mallen's/ F.B. 'Hop Bitters'/ By/ Bravissimo-Gypsy Queen/ Buckland Park/ May 1885', together with two playing cups, each engraved with 'S.A.C.C./ Waterloo Cup/ 1885'. Marks: (Crown) H.Steiner (lion) Adelaide (Victoria), ref: JBH199. Height 35 cm; Combined weight: 1125grams. Provenance: Private Collection. Notes: Robert Barr Smith (1824-1915) was a great entrepeneur and philanthropist born and educated in Scotland. He migrated to Victoria in 1854 and the following year moved on to Adelaide where he would do his greatest work. He joined the mercantile and pastoral firm of Elders & Co.and married (his second) wife Joanna, the sister of George elder. By 1863 he would run the Company in partnership with Thomas elder. His financial interests were vast helping to develop South Australia and ranged as mentioned from pastoral interests to mining, steam shipping, insurance and banking, which included the foundation of the Bank of South Australia. Adelaide University was perhaps the greatest beneficiary of his philanthropy, but Barr Smith also helped with the completion of St Peter's cathedral and gifted works tot he Art gallery to mention but a few.
