Silver Adelaide racing club trophy by J M Wendt, with scrolled double handles, fern tree stem and emu mounted cover, engraved: 'Adelaide Racing Club/ Anniversary Meeting/ 1889/ Pony Race / Presented By/, the Hon W K Simms M.L.C./ Won By/ W Packhams Vesta/ Ridden By/ Mr W Ferguson'. Marks: (lion passant) / J.M. Wendt/ Adelaide/ (lion passant) ref: Jbh No. 232. Height 38 cm. Weight: 870 grams. Provenance: Private Collection. Notes: Although racing clubs in South Australia have along tradition in slightly different formats the Adelaide racing club is formed in 1888 after a hyatus of several years of horse racing because the government banned all forms of betting. William Knox Smith (-1897) was a businessman and politician who made his fortune in the brewery business to form later the South Australian Brewery Company. He had a strong interest in racing and in 1867 was president of the South Australian jockey club. for a similar design see Jbh Vol II pp 82
