Description:
Silver mounted emu egg 'Botanical' vase by J M Wendt, with twin handles modelled as Sturt Desert Peas, leading to a stained egg with fretwork collar resting on a circular base with chased leaves. Marks: Jm Wendt / Adelaide ref Jbh no 228. Combined weight: 385 grams. Height 32 cm. Provenance: Sotheby's. Vizard Foundation. 2001 Geelong Exhibition no 24. Notes: the Sturt Desert Pea was first found by the explorer William Dampier in 1699. It received its common name from Charles Napier Sturt (1795-1869) who in his last expedition in 1844 discovered large numbers of the pea. South Australia adopted the flower as its state emblem in 1961.
