Silver claret jug for Kilpatrick & Co. of simple baluster form, the hinged cover with kangaroo and grape leaf finial and a ropetwist handle, engraved to the front with the arms of Victoria, a hatched shield incorporating the Southern cross, flanked by maidens emblematic of Peace and Prosperity and appropriately named in the motto below, surmounted by an armorial of a half kangaroo holding the Imperial Crown. marks: engraved to foot Kilpatrick & Co./ Melbourne / 39 Collins St West, in the centre engraved 'S' also embossed Stg silver. Weight: 700 grams. Height 39 cm. Provenance: Vizard Foundation. Notes: Kilpatrick & Co.was a partnership established in 1853 with connections to Britain as well. It operated as a retail business advertising as gold and silversmiths, Jewellers and watchmakers, with goods drawn from both local and British manufacturers. It appears that only later with Edwards and Fischer ceasing that an attempt at independant production was commenced. In 1855 the premises in 39 Collins St West were opened. Victoria seceeded from New South Walesin 1851. It is not entirely clear when the state badge was designed however a naval flag with the Southern cross was flown in 1870 and the convention of the stars established in 1877.
