Description:
Early silver Lodge presentation container retailed by Wendt, probably retailed by Wendt, the circular box with a loose cover mounted with a starburst and circular medallion, the central Lodge shield and crest with motto 'Amicitia Amor Veri' flanked by Faith, Hope and Charity, above an allegory possibly of the colony Australia and Brittania, signed to the corner Isaac Simmons, the interior with the inscription: 'Presented To/ Geo. Woodcock Esq./ By The/ Brothers of the Loyal Foley Lodge/ Eardisley/ of the L.O.F.M.U in Token of His Many/ and Valuable Services to the Cause Of/ Oddfellowship/ Jany.1849'. Marks: Sheffield C1847 maker is for Isaac Simmons or John Shaw and to base (Crown and Lion Passant) Wendt. Weight: 169 Grams. Height 6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Notes: For a similar but later example see 'The Silversmiths of Birmingham 1750-1980) Pp135. It appears that the central medal was used for various masonry objects but here the medal and box may be from the same maker. Wendt arrived in South Australia not until 1854.
