English silver salver of New Zealand Interest by Stephen Smith and William Nicholson, the shaped rim embossed with flying 'C' scrolls and sprays of fruit, the inner rim bright cut with linear designs bearing inscription: 'to/ Henry King Esquire/ Commander.R.N./ ten Years resident Magistrate/ of New Plymouth/ This testimonial of Regard/ Is Presented/ with the best wishes of his/ fellow Colonists/ Taranaki 22nd September 1852'. Marks: London C1853 maker Ss.Wn diameter 39.5 cm. Provenance: private collection. Notes: the new Zeal& Company was a British private Company with an interest in the systematic colonisation and development of New Zealand and operated separately and in opposition to the Colonial office. U nder its auspices Captain Henry King (1783-1874) established Brooklands farm, in new Plymouth on the west coast of the northern island, in 1842. Operating as a model farm it also served as his residence.
