Description:
A superb and rare 17th Century bracket clock signed 'John Hughes, London (active 1689 died in 1695)' It is believed this clock was cased c1710-20, but it is probably the original case. The seven day movement has a verge escapement and striking a bell on the hour. The back plate has ornate wriggle work engraving. The silvered and gilt dial with conforming spondrils, date apeture and strike/silent subsidary in arch. Original blued and mock pendulum apeture. The case in the much rarer walnut (most were either ebonised or mahogony) with beautifully fretted sound boards. Original finish. Movement has been cleaned and oiled in recent years and runs very well. Winder and rear door key in case. 45 x 18 x 26 cm
