A fine Chinese Huanghuali three-drawer coffer, late Ming/early Qing Dynasty, 17th century, the top with scroll ends, a large compartment beneath, with two doors and two outer panels, the sides very well carved with two openwork dragon spandrels 90 cm high, 220 cm wide, 54 cm deep See Christies Ny, 'The Dr S.Y. Yip Collection', 20/9/2002, lot 51 for an almost identical coffer; This collection was formed by descendants of the Australian vendor, whose great-great grandfather was based in Peking and Shanghai between 1850-1870, where he held a high diplomatic position and it would have been at this time that he acquired the important Chinese artworks in this collection.
