Description:
A mother of pearl and cut work wunschbilletten, Continental, early 19th century with an urn and fountain and flowers. 'Wie Des Beckens Silberflache, Wie die Quelle selbst so rein; Soll geschmuckt mit sanfter Freude, Jeder tag des Lebens seyn..'. In period gilt-wood frame, these three lots, 238, 239 & 240 are fine examples of Biedermeier wunschbilletten, elaborate versions of the popular Victorian Valentine, traditionally exchanged by lovers on February 14, the feast of St. Valentine, patrons saint of lovers. Produced in vast numbers, the English Valentines were almost always made of paper or card and decorated with cut paper 'Lace', chromolithographic scraps and ribbon, the Biedermeier versions were infinitely more luxurious, often featuring finely carved mother of pearl, gilt thread, beads and enamel and with printed sentimental messages incorporated into the design.
