1931 (May) Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans-Arctic Submarine Expedition cover, with cachet in black & straight-line 'New York to North Pole'; USA 2c & Falkland Islands 1d (tied by 29OC28 cds) with green 'Wilkins Antarctic Expedition/Deception Island' cachet at right. In 1928, the Australian Hubert Wilkins & the Canadian Carl Ben Eilson had undertaken the first powered flight in Antarctica, taking off from an improvised ash runway at Whalers Bay. This cover was then included in the 1931 Arctic Submarine mail.
