A rare and important pair of Arita polychrome figures, Genroku period, (1688-1703), each one in the form of a Chinese girl, dancing while balancing a pot on her right palm, her dog jumping at her feet, decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, iron red, black and green enamels, 32 cm. Literature: Kurita Museum, Nov 20 1981, Tokyo, cat No. 16, pg54-55, This figure must have been modelled on a young Chinese girl who would have lived in Nagasaki in those days.the dress is decorated with an overwhelming red colour which most Chinese like. She has a typically Chinese hair-style which one doesn't see in Japan. This lively maiden figure has a strong colouring composition and gives an intense exotic expression.'
