Description:
A very fine pair of cinnabar lacquer bowls, late Ming, 16/17th century, each one exquisitely carved with magpies amongst rocks and peony flowers, between lappet and key-fret borders, later silver liners. Diameter 11 cm. Height 7.5 cm. Although this design is typical of the period, these bowls are of exceptionally high quality and in excellent condition. Provenance: The John Hilliard Collecton, London, Literature: Chinese Metalwares and decorative arts volume 2, the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, England, No. 321 for a bowl of similar design
