Description:
A Fine Australian Native Timber Specimen Table Top Circa 1840 Circular, centred by a five point star and finely veneered with a radiating sun burst parquetry pattern in cedar, casuarina, red mahogany, river oak, eucalyptus, blue gum, silky oak, black wood, pine and other timbers, within a cedar surround, 98 cm diameter. History: William Thomas Cook had led an eventful life by the time he was sentenced to eight years transportation to the colony of New South Wales. He had fought and lived through the battle of Trafalgar and managed to train himsef as a carpenter in his twenty five years. Cook sailed from Falmouth aboard the convict ship Mangles on 7th August, 1820, arriving in Botany Bay on 13th November of that same year. William 'Cookie' Cook had trained as a carpenter and was immediately put to work in his trade at various buildings in the new colony. He was granted his freedom on 26th July, 1826 and eventually settled at Morpeth in the Hunter Region where the table was made. This table (top) has been passed down through four generations of the Cook family and represents a unique piece of Australian history having remained in the hands of the maker's family since its construction in around 1840. It is now being offered for sale by William Thomas Cook's great, great grandaughter
