Fine betel nut mortar, of unusual form, the top portion carved open as a mortar with typical scrollwork carved in high relief; in the centre, a raised circular band with shell insets and raised birds in high relief, their beaks pecking at a raised fish motif beneath; each bird forming the 'Nose' of the face made up of two disks for eyes, and the remaining two birds as the back of the stylised head and 'Ears'. Variegated lustrous surface. Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay Province. Provenance: mark Lissauer. Height 60 cm. Width 5 cm.
