G. Crisell (Italian, 19th century) Susanna Italian, dated 1890 an important carved Carrara marble sculpture, depicting a semi-draped maiden, turning with a look of scorn, raised on an ornately carved verde marble plinth, signed G. Crisell, Roma, 1890, inscribed title, the figure. Height 103 cm; the base. Height 86 cm. Provenance: Leonard Joel, Normanhurst - Estate of the late Henry F. Young, 19th November 1929, lot 261, illustrated catalogue page 5 1929-1961 - collection of the late Charles Titchener then by family descent. History: the outstanding carved marble sculpture, Susanna, was acquired by the late Charles Titchener at Leonard Joel's dispersal of the estate of the late Melbourne publican, Henry F. Young. In 1875 in partnership with Thomas J. Jackson, young founded one of Melbourne's oldest pubs, young and Jackson's, on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Street in Melbourne, the auction of young's collection was held on-site at his stately Brighton mansion, Normanhurst, from 19th-22nd November 1929. From this point onwards, Susanna occupied a prime position in Charles Titchener's own stately home in Parkdale, Victoria, the statue is accompanied by a facsimile copy of the original printed catalogue for the auction, including an illustration of the statue in-situ at Normanhurst, displayed amongst a magnificent array of Art and antiques from Jackson's collection.
