Description:
North Shore Picnic on a Hill circa 1910 oil on canvas Watkins, John Samuel signed lower left 152 x 91 cm Private: Purchased directly from the artist's wife estate, Emily Griffin Watkins, who was a close friend of the vendor's mother. When she was alive it was related that this was a picnic scene of her and her friends in their younger days on a hill next to Middle Harbour picking flowers. She said it was her husband's favourite painting. John Samuel Watkins studied in Paris, was a Trustee of the Art Gallery of Nsw, was vice president of the Royal Art Society of Nsw. He was nicknamed 'Wattie' by his students, and this nickname was later taken up by his wife in the later years of her life. Watkins directed a school of painting for over 40 years in Sydney. His students included Henry A Hanke, Norman Baker, Alan B Baker, Sir Eric Langer, William Pidgeon. For many years Watkins was not keen to sell his paintings because he believed that this was in direct competition with his students which included many Archibald prize winners.
