Description:
An important Colonial walnut settle with lift up seat. The back panels are carved with two dragons facing each other, in the Jacobean style. Between these two panels is a mark carved in relief. The arms are heavily carved and decorated with sunflowers and palmettes in the Grecian style and the heavily ornate base is also carved with dragons and Jacobean style carving. It rests on two Regency style paw feet. Typically Victorian, this settle is very eclectic in style and uses decoration from several different eras. It is especially interesting to see this in a New Zealand piece of furnture. See Furniture of the New Zealand Colonial Era, An Illustrated History 1830-1900, page 195. 127 mm length x 110 mm height x 435 mm width
