Description:
An early Victorian sterling silver presentation jug and two goblets, by Robert Hennell, London 1859, all boldly embossed with scroll, foliate and fruit decoration, the jug on a plain circular foot ring, with an S-shaped handle, a rim spout and hinged lid surmounted by a horse, the scroll cartouche on one side of the body embossed with three horses' heads above a trough in front of which two birds, the other side inscribed 'Presented to / George Race Esqre / by the gentlemen of his hunt / as a token of / their regard and esteem / Oct 13th 1859', the matching goblets with bell shaped bowls lightly gilded inside and engraved in a scroll cartouche with the initials 'Gr' (for George Race), a matching embossed lightly domed circular foot below on a knopped stem, the jug 1875gm, 35 cm high; the goblets 645gm, 18 cm high (3). Provenance: Purchased from R. Feldman Ltd, London in 1990 for £9000. Then presented to the winner of the Castlemaine Stakes at Eagle Farm.
