Description:
1991 Lotus Excel Sa Coupé. Registration No. Unregistered. Chassis No. SCC089912KHG12902. E. Originally intended to be known as the Eclat 3 and then the Eclat Excel, the Lotus Excel (Type 89) was produced from 1982 to 1992. Due to significantly reduced sales of the Eclat the Lotus firm needed to provide a more competitively priced car to suit a market suffering a recession. At the time Lotus were assisting Toyota who owned a substantial share in the company prior to the General Motors buy out. To this end Lotus were given access to the not unsubstantial parts bin at Toyota. For the Excel the standard 2.2 Litre engine remained much as before but was now mated to the Toyota five speed manual transmission developed for the Toyota Supra. The chassis received some modifications including galvanizing, but the essential layout remained as before. By using various Toyota parts and cooperating with the firm Lotus were able to reduce the price of the car from 15,000 pounds to a more competitive 13,787 pounds. The aerodynamic improvements gave the car a top speed of over 130mph and the press raved about the car's superb handling. As production progressed various options and upgrades were offered to the ever demanding public. As well as the more powerful and higher specification Excel Se, from 1986 onwards the company offered a four speed automatic transmission model designated the Excel Sa utilizing the same transmission fitted to Bmw and Jaguar XJ6's of the time. Lotus went one step further and fitted cruise control for added effect. As one can imagine the production of an Automatic transmission Lotus may have come as a bit of a shock to the usual Lotus buyer and as such only a limited number Excel SAs were ever produced. It is one of these extremely rare Sa models offered for sale here. Purchased by the current owner in 2005 from a Mr Katsikanis in Melbourne this example has covered under 75,000kms from new. Believed to have been sold new to a Mrs Shelly Wilson of Mosman Sydney through Cremorne Prestige Cars it is supplied with the original log books and a fully stamped service book up until 2005. Since then the car has seen little use but has been serviced and sundry invoices will be supplied with the sale of the car detailing the minor work carried out since 2005.
