Description:
c1966 Lotus Type 22/F3 Single Seater Racing. We have been advised that this car would have been used as a simulator rather than an actual racecar, hence the simplicity of the design of the chassis. When Formula 3 replaced the then expensive Formula Junior series in 1964 it became the new arena for up and coming stars. Lotus provided customers with what were essentially modified Lotus Type 22 multi-tubular spaceframe chassis cars for this formula selling them as new Type 31s. The Formula 3 cars ran with 997cc Cosworth Ford 109E engines breathing through single Weber or Su carburetors. The 31s were not particularly successful against the more advanced monocoque cars they competed with in the 1964 season but the simplicity of the design made them very suitable for use as training cars in racing schools. Never a company to miss a money making opportunity Lotus, rather sensibly, produced around 19 Lotus 22/F3s and sold them to racing schools. The rolling chassis offered here has the appearance of a Type 31. However the car is also fitted with radio equipment and a speaker behind the driver's head which would suggest that it is more likely to be one of the 19 Lotus 22/F3 cars sold to racing schools for driver training. As the history of this particular car is unknown (it was purchased by the current owner through EBay from Canada sight unseen) and it carries no chassis plate or identification buyers are advised that the description of this car is only based on the evidence available at the time of going to press and should therefore satisfy themselves as to the car's identity and type prior to bidding.
