A stoneware jar with four loop handles. Sui Dynasty or earlier. The four-handled jar is among the most enduring forms in early Chinese ceramics, the looped ears originally designed to receive cord lashings for transport and storage; produced from the Han dynasty through the Tang, examples of the Sui period are distinguished by a more compact silhouette and the introduction of olive-toned glazes characteristic of the northern kilns. Died in Melbourne, Australia in 2007. Member of the Oriental ceramic Society (USA) from 1953-1982. Mossgreen auction, Melbourne. Height: 14.5 cm
