Description:
A Ship Captain's Note Book dated 1793, containing recipes for medical cures, scientific formulae, a how to make section for everyday non-medical necessities, plus many others. 80 pages, vellum covers, very legible. An example of one of the cures. To Cure Warts, take the scum from the boiling of potatoes and anoint the warts, it is a sure cure. There are a total of 250 cures and remedies. A valuable primary folk medicine source document with a fascinating glimpse into the thinking, needs and medical knowledge of that time. The book is titled Receip 1793 on front cover and 1793 on back cover. The book is in two parts. The first half is medical remedies, turn the book over and read from the back for the other recipies. The title page of the medical part reads, Captain Stone, Christchurch, Hants, May 1st 1793. The title page of the second half reads Captain Stone, born at Winsham Somerset, December 29th 1753. Family history tells us that Captain Stone, a ship's captain was, due to the scarcity of medical doctors, the general practitioner on his ship. The exact date of the arrival of this book in Australia is unknown. However, included with the book is a loose page with the name Mr.R(ichard) Stone, Melbourne, 1 Oct l849. On the reverse is a recipe for A cure for the Cholera. Charles Stone, grandfather of the present owner, was a teacher in Little Brighton, Vic. in 1847 and possibly at a later date, the Mayor. It appears that the book has been in the family since the late 18th century
