Description:
A rare late 19th century German walnut quarter chiming 'Cuckoo and Quail' cuckoo clock, the case with serpentine top and applied carved foliate scrolls over an ogee base and plinth with shaped apron, the 7. 5 inch painted Roman dial with outer minute track and fancy hands, the movement with thick brass plates skeletonised in the American fashion, yet with three fusees, anchor escapement striking the quarters and the hours on a pair of coiled gongs mounted to the inside of the solid rear door, at each blow doors above the dial open to reveal a carved and painted quail for the quarters and cuckoo for the hours, with relevant sound effect actuated via three bellow-operated pipes. Height 46 cm Note: as early as 1782 the Black Forest families of Ketterer and Kammerer moved to London from Neukirch.
