A mid 20th century mahogany two day marine chronometer with interesting Australian provenance, Thomas Mercer Ltd, St Albans, England, No 16447 the spotted free sprung movement with diamond end stone over a palladium helical hairspring terminating in an Earnshaw-type spring detent escapement with cut and compensated bimetallic balance, chain fusee and maintaining power, signed and numbered silvered dial 18 cm high Provenance: Used aboard the Australian naval ship Vernon Sturdee Royal Australian Engineers, named after the World War One Australian Major General of that name.
