Description:
A Royal Worcester 'Limoges Enamel' decorated exhibition vase on pedestal, dated 1865, the enamel decoration by Thomas Bott, the vase of baluster shape on a circular foot with a knopped stem, a pair of inward-scrolling handles to the shoulders, standing on a circular plinth with a stepped base, all cobalt blue ground with enamelled classical motifs and gilt details throughout, the front of the body with a gilt-framed scene finely rendered in white enamel of Hermes (mercury) educating Eros (cupid) attended by an allegorical winged female figure, the reverse enamelled with a caduceus within a laurel wreath, the body, foot, and pedestal made in separate parts, the undersides of the foot and pedestal signed by Bott and with printed factory marks dated '65', 55 cm high. Exhibited: the Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1867. Literature: the Art Journal illustrated catalogue of the universal exhibition, Paris, 1867, Virtue & Co., London and New York, page 57, R.W. Binns, catalogue of a collection of Worcester porcelain in the Museum at the Royal porcelain works (Worcester, 1882), illustrated facing p. 162, engraving titled 'Exhibited 1867'. Condition: areas of restoration to the enamel on the figures in the main decorative cartouche, the frame of the cartouche, and the floral band at the base of the body (extensively so), upper part of the socle showing signs of restoration, two hairlines cracks and a larger cracks to the footring., areas of restoration to the gilding and other decoration to the handles, and to one side of the base moulding of the pedestal (approx, 3 cm long), professionally restored by Ms Sarah Peek of Brighton England (recommended by John Sandon)
