Description:
A We mask, ivory coast, used in masquerades. The mask is carved from wood and features twised fabrice secured to the large opening with wrapped cane that creares large gaping lips. At the chin is braided rafia for a beard. Along the jaw is an adornments of strings of bead and bells. At the top of the mask is a clam-shaped form with two bent nails at the peak, and nails around the edge. The rim of the mask is also wrapped in cane. On the inside of the mask we can observe chisel marks from the artists tool. Mask height 46 cm, width 20 cm, depth 2 cm, on stand height 54 cm. Provenance: Lim-Strutt collection, Aotearoa
