A pair of Japanese giltwood Shishi / Komainu figures, Edo period (1603-1868), circa 18th/19th century, modelled as seated Buddhist guardian lions, one with mouth open, the other closed and with a crested head, both carved from joined wooden pieces, with gesso, polychrome pigments and gilding, and with inset glass eyes.
