Description:
A pair of Chinese inscribed hardwood side chairs, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 18th/19th century, with curved, round section toprails fitted to round section posts, a curved backsplat plain to the front but with large characters inscribed to the reverse reading 'Shishan Yegong Ci' (Yegong shrine at Shishan). The timber with highly figured grain including multiple 'Ghost face' knots with a shimmering, deep golden colour under a remnant brown lacquer finish, possibly huanghuali. Each chair approximately 106.5 cm high, 53 cm wide, 42 cm deep. Provenance: purchased in Hong Kong, 1970s.
