Description:
A rare and unusual late Victorian Australian blackwood games table, unidentified Melbourne maker, circa 1890, the heptagonal leatherette-lined top with concave sides above a frieze with a small drawer to each of its seven sides, each side of the frieze divided by a small projecting partly-enclosed shelf, raised on turned supports with brass and porcelain castors, 77.5 cm high, 153 cm diameter. Provenance: The Celtic club collection, Melbourne.. Other Notes: only one other table of this design, has been traced, also in blackwood, with minor variations in some details (Leski Auctions, the Gary & Genevieve Morgan collection, part one, Melbourne, 7 December, 2021, lot 146). That two tables of this design and period have both appeared in Melbourne, and nowhere else, suggests that their design and manufacture was original and unique to an unidentified Melbourne maker,
