Description:
A 19th century tewhatewha with hawk bundles, fine tewhatewha in orthodox form with axe shaped blade leading to a flattened cylindrical shaft and spear point. Below the distinctive blade of the tewhatewha hangs an early ball of karearea (New Zealand falcon) feathers lashed with fine strands of muka (processed flax). Feathers were used to distract ones opponent by moving the tewhatewha in a flicking motion, once their eyes diverted the decisive blow was delivered. Tewhatewha were also used as signals during battles with the flicking feathers visible over vast distances. On custom presentation stand. Length 110 cm. Private collection - USA
