Geelong: Alfred Earnest Batty (1879: 1970) played 9 games for Geelong in 1902 and then became a V.F.L. Umpire. A group of original letters to Batty,: April 16, 1904 from Charles Brownlow, Secretary Geelong cricket & Football Club, inviting Batty to the first night of training,: April 26, 1906 from E.L. Wilson, Secretary V.F.L. Informing Batty that he has 'Been appointed as one of the boundary umpires in the practice match Geelong V Marylebone,: April 5, 1907 letter from E.L. Wilson, Secretary V.F.L. Informing Batty that his 'Name has been placed on the list of boundary umpires available for selection during the season,: May 4, 190?, a similar letter, specifying the 'Coming season at Geelong...: July 6th, 1911, a typed letter, signed by Wilson, explaining how high the ball should be thrown, '....not less than 10 feet but not too much over... Also, a 2-page carbon copy headed 'Notes for field and boundary Umpires'. (6 items).
