Description:
Paolo Buffa pair of armchairs, circa 1950, the beech frame with shaped stick back and lattice supports to the curved arms, calico seat upholstery. Height 78.5 cm, width 62.5 cm, depth 69 cm. Provenance: Thomas Hamel collection, Sydney. Other Notes: Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and furniture designer known for combining neoclassical and Art Deco design motifs with modernist principles. He worked in the studio of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia before opening his own office with the architect Cassi Ramelli. He exhibited many times at the Milan Triennial and in 1948 he exhibited at the 34th salon de Artistes Decorators in Paris which further enhanced his popularity in France. In the 1960s he collaborated with Cassina and before his death in 1970 had become one of the most important designers in Italy.
