Description:
Ole Wanscher pair of armchairs for Fritz Hansen, Denmark, 1940s, model 1755, each with a serpentine ladder back flanking the shaped arms, the dished solid seat on turned legs with ball feet, with buttoned leather squab. Height 86 cm, seat height 41 cm, width 61 cm, depth 52 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Denmark, Thence by descent. Private Collection Southern Highlands, acquired from the above 2014. Other Notes: Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) was a leading Danish furniture designer who became integral to Denmark's midcentury modern movement. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of fine Arts and developed a simple and refined aesthetic which referenced classic forms from the past. He was awarded many accolades including the Copenhagen Carpenters' Guild Annual Award and the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1960. Some of his iconic designs include Pj-149 Colonial chair (1949), Rungstedlund dining chair (c. 1950), ladies desk (1954) and Egyptian stool (1957).
