Description:
A Maltese silver miniature naval cannon, presented to Sir Robert Menzies, on an ebonised plinth having two stacks of cannon balls, silver and wood ramrod, the barrel decorated with a crowned Maltese cross, dolphins and a coat of arms, on an ebonised carriage with silver wheels, with plaque engraved 'Presented to Rt. Hon. Robert G. Menzies P.C, Ch, Q.C, Ll.M, Ll,D (Hon Malta) by the Maltese Government Malta 14th June 1956', hallmarked to barrel, height 14 cm, length 29 cm, width 14 cm. Other Notes: Robert Menzies visited Malta in June 1956 en route to the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference in London. Arriving on the liner 'Arcadia' he was greeted by the premier of Malta, Dom Mintoff and day-long celebrations were arranged in his honour as well as the conferring of an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta.
