Description:
A Chinese documentary bronze censer, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chongzhen period (1627-1644), dated 1634/1635, finely cast in bombe-form with lion mask handles and an eight character mark in relief in seal script inset to the base, translating as 'Han home collection. Chongzhen Ixi.', the de Voogd collection, 7 cm high, 20.5 cm diameter. Other Notes: the 7th year of the Chongzhen era (the year 'Ixi'), began on January 29th 1634 and ended on February 16th 1635. The censer is thus effectively dated 1634 or 1635. (note that many sources inaccurately equate the 7th year of the Chongzhen era with 1634.) Han was a not uncommon Chinese surname at the time in question, especially in northern and central china. Translation and Notes by Ely Finch (2020).
