Description:
[The Sydney Morning Herald and Laban White], A collection of fourteen different receipts, issued and signed by Laban White [1794 - 1873] on behalf of the Sydney Morning Herald or John Fairfax. The period involved in these transactions, when White was an agent and correspondent for the Smh cover the period when he was resident in Windsor. Local residents and businesses could lodge and pay for advertisements with White and one dated De cmeber 1854 is for an advertisement to sell the Richmond Toll Gate, others are for tenders on behalf of the Richmond Road Trust. On his death, the Smh published an obituary: 'Late Mr Laban White..On Friday night last, this worthy old resident of Windsor died, at the venerable age of 80. He had lived at Windsor for upwards of forty years. In his early career he successfully carried on business as a chemist and druggist, and subsequently as auctioneer. Retiring from business, he filled several public offices with credit and satisfaction... Interestingly, what was omitted from this brief summary, was the fact that White had arrived in New South wales as a convict, one of 160 convicts transported on the ship Eliza, which arrived in November 1822. He had been convicted of embezzlement at Bristol Quarter Sessions and sentenced to be transported for a term of 14 years.
