Description:
After Jean-Louis Ducis- Mary Queen of Scots, oil on canvas. Late-19th century. Depicting Mary Stuart playing the harpsichord, at Edinburgh's Holyrood Palace with David Rizzio, who accompanies her on the lute. Rizzio was considered a good musician, and an excellent singer, which first brought him to the attention of the cosmopolitan young Queen. Towards the end of 1564, having grown wealthy under her patronage, he became the queen's secretary for relations with France and rumoured lover. Both were Catholics, and Scottish noble men (who were mostly Protestant) resented his influence over her. They eventually murdered him in front of her. The political situation became so difficult that Mary fled to England leaving her Son James behind, where he became King James VI of Scotland. Mary was the heir to the English throne and Queen Elizabeth I (her cousin) treated her as a threat. 90.5 x 71 cm
