Description:
A very fine Louis XIV commode, attributed to master Cabinetmaker Thomas Hache (1664-1747), the Hache family was a celebrated dynasty of cabinetmakers from the city of Grenoble at the foot of the French Alps. Led by Noel Hache (1630-1675), the Son of a master baker, who didn't follow in his father's footsteps and instead was introduced to the veneer technique in a workshop of a master from Calais. His Son Thomas was born in Chambery, following in his father's footsteps he worked there as an apprentice and learned the Italian ornamentation style and the decorative elements of arabesque, fashioning acanthus and interlacing patterns. Around 1695, he moved to Grenoble where he worked as the companion of Michel Chevalier, master cabinetmaker. In 1697, Chevalier died and Thomas married his daughter two years later, and by 1700 he was at the helm of the workshop. In the first two decades of the 18th century as the Louis XIV era developed into the Regency style, Hache's reputation flourished gaining notoriety and in 1721 became the official cabinetmaker for Duke Louis of Orleans, governor of Dauphine. The commode in matched rosewood and fruitwood veneer. The D-shaped top inlaid with diamond shapes and central oval medallion above three slightly convex drawers, inlaid with frisages and nets. Each fitted with ornate gilt bronze drop handles with masks and acanthus scrolls. Each drawer with heraldic lions crested on keyhole escutcheons with crowns. Above a shaped apron with central female mask flanked by scrolling acanthus decoration, the legs with foliate and acanthus mounts. Flanked by bulging canted sides surmounted with gilt bronze corbels draped with falling lily of the valley. With lock and cast iron key.
