Description:
A model mill, Han Dynasty. Modelled in green-glazed red-earthenware with four windows and a door. The low rectangular building is open on one side to show a treadle-operated grain-pounding tilt-hammer and mortar. The hammer itself was once free on its fulcrum but has become adherent with burial-earth. On the right of the mill, the floor is a circular bedstone complete with radial grooving. The mill has a separate upper millstone, or runner, with two moulded half-moon indentations on its top. This upper millstone has a small projection at one side. The mill building is surmounted by a sloping roof Modelled with imitation tiles and ornamental features at each of the four corners and at each end of the roof-tree. The whole model has been applied overall with a green lead glaze which is now degraded and showing iridescence.
