Description:
A Henan jar, possibly Tang /Song Dynasty. Jar with a wide neck and the everted lip above an ovoid body with symmetrical shoulders. The clay body is covered in the dark brown glaze which in places does not reach the rough unglazed irregular base. The latter shows adherent patches, possibly spur-marks. The glaze on one side of the jar is pitted as though it had been lying for a long time on that side. It seems to be made of rather coarse grey clay with a generous plaster of slip on the outside. There is no visible evidence of luting. There are areas of dark green inclusions within the glaze on the base. The glaze, although reaching inside the rim, is there very irregular and appears 'Unfinished'. There May have been two or three applications of glaze. The inside of the jar appears to have had a coating of something, possibly not glaze, and this May have been subsequent to manufacture. This jar was included, unattributed, amongst a group of song ceramics. It is indeed difficult to be certain of its attribution. It is certainly Henan ware but the dating is difficult. The shape might suggest Tang dynasty (618-906) but I have no real evidence either for or against such an attribution. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 16 cm, depth 13 cm
