Description:
Model of SS Oronsay (1925-1942) together with a silver plated salt and pepper with the Oronsay coat of arms. This model was built by the head cook onboard the ship at the time of her sinking by torpedo fire from the Italian submarine 'Archimede' 800 nautical miles off west Africa. He clung to a balk of timber from a cargo palate until picked up two days later from the ocean by a lifeboat from the ship. He kept the balk of timber and later carved the hull of this model from the wood that had saved his life.
