Description:
A Japanese woodblock print Utagawa Toyoshige (1777-1835), Edo period, circa 1834 one oban yoko-e, entitled 'Evening bell at Kamakura': mountains of AWA Province Seen from Tsurugaoka (Kamakura banshe, Tsurugaoka yori Beshe yama no zu), from the series eight views of Famous places (Meisho Hakkei), 2nd edition, circa 1834, signed Toyokuni hitsu, with kiwame censer seal and publisher mark of Iseya Rihei, 24 cm x 37 cm other Notes: Toyoshige initially worked as a Pottery dealer and was the pupil and Son in law of the famous Utagawa Toyokuni whose name he took after his death in 1825. Other students in the school namely Kunisada were outraged that Toyoshige could assume the name of the late master and his claim to the name Toyokuni II was not widely recognised. Previous to producing this series he was not highly regarded as an ukiyo-e artist, however the work briefly elevated him to the level of landscape masters Hokusai and Hiroshige.
