A fine pair of late 18th/early 19th century Anglo-Portuguese rosewood armchairs, the cartouche shaped back with pierced splat and C-scroll carved top rail above reeded shaped down swept arms with over scrolled hand rests on shaped supports, over a drop in seat, carved front rail and raised on cabriole legs with foliate carved knees and scrolled leaf feet (2). Note: Although of Portuguese construction, the present armchairs are of markedly English design, providing a reminder of the close cultural ties linking England and Portugal in the 18th century and the reliance of Portuguese furniture makers at this period on the work of their English contemporaries.
